All-female Ghostbusters reboot announced

Director Paul Feig announced the cast of the rebooted Ghostbusters series on Twitter.

Announced today on Twitter by director Paul Feig, the principal cast of the all-new Ghostbusters reboot have been confirmed as Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Feig also revealed the release date for the new film in a follow-up tweet, which will hit US cinemas on 22 July 2016.

Ghostbusters will not be the first time Feig has worked with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, as both starred in his previous film, 2011’s Bridesmaids.

The reboot of the classic 80s series has endured a troubled history, with directors and cast members coming and going. The majority of the original cast has also agreed to reprise their roles at one point, prior to the passing of Harold Ramis and with the exception of Bill Murray, who has repeated downplayed any rumours of his return to the franchise. Whether any or all of the remaining cast return to their roles now an all-female lead cast has been confirmed, however, remains unclear.
