Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones

Disney have officially confirmed the return of everyone’s favourite archeologist treasure hunter.

In news which will delight fans the world over, Disney have today officially confirmed the return of Indiana Jones, in an as-yet-untitled fifth adventure, to be directed by none other than Steven Spielberg.Plus, if that wasn’t enough to have you reaching for your whip and fedora, it’s also been confirmed that Indiana himself, Harrison Ford, will be back to reprise his iconic role once again.

The future of the Indiana Jones franchise has been quite mysterious in recent years after the rights were sold to the House of Mouse alongside George Lucas’s other – slightly less well-known – series, Star Wars. Over the past few years, there have been many mooted contenders to replace Ford in the rumoured sequel – and, indeed, possible reboot – including Chris Pratt, of Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy fame, Bradley Cooper and even Shia Labeouf, who played Jones’s son Mutt Williams in 2008’s fourth Indiana Jones adventure Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which received mixed reviews on its release.

While it’s a fairly certain bet that one day we’ll have a replacement for Ford, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere for the time being, as this newest adventure is set to be released in July 2019 – some 11 years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. At a cool three years away, it’s unlikely that we’ll hear much more on Indy 5 in the coming months and years until production starts – most likely sometime in late 2017 or early 2018. Between now and then, Harrison Ford’s going to be busy filming the as-yet-untitled sequel to his 1982 cult classic, Blade Runner, currently set to hit cinemas in 2018.

Still, today’s news is fantastic for us Indy fans, and it’s great to have the original gang back together – including George Lucas and Disney’s Kathleen Kennedy, who will both have producing credits on the new film. Of today’s announcement, Disney chairman Alan Horn had the following to say:

Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.
