The Kingsman sequel is officially happening!

The first poster for the Kingsman: The Secret Service sequel teases the return of an old friend.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was one of my surprise favourite films of 2015, so I was delighted to hear that a sequel had officially be greenlit by 20th Century Fox and starring return leads, Taron Egerton as Eggsy and Mark Strong as Merlin.

It’s still early days, so very little is known about the sequel other than its title, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. There’s a couple of stars who are rumoured to be attached to the film, including Halle Berry as the head of the US equivalent of Britain’s Kingsman division, the Statesmen, which means that The Golden Circle is definitely heading international, which can only be a good thing. Right?

Anyway, Taron Egerton – fresh from his turn as Eddie the Eagle in… ummm… Eddie the Eagle – tweeted out the first poster for the film a couple of days ago, and it hints at the return of one of the first film’s most loved characters – Colin Firth’s dapper gentleman, and Egerton’s character’s mentor, Harry Hart – who was shockingly killed halfway through The Secret Service. I’m not too sure what to make of this, if I’m honest – Firth and his character were one of first film’s best aspects, and bringing him back in some way seems like a cop-out of what was genuinely an extremely shocking cinematic moment. Still, I loved his character and, provided his return is handled ‘properly’ (and assuming Egerton’s tease isn’t just a red herring), I could totally get on board with Firth returning as Hart.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is currently in production and will be directed by Matthew Vaughn. It has a projected release date of June 16 2017, so hopefully we’ll start to hear more and more details being released about this as the next few months go by.
