Mary Poppins is back!

The first image of Emily Blunt in the Mary Poppins sequel has been released.

It was a while ago now that Disney announced a sequel to one of its most iconic classics of all time, but Mary Poppins Returns is slowly creeping up on us and the first image of Emily Blunt in the titual role has been released by the House of Mouse.

Emily Blunt is Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns.

Blunt seems to be channelling the eponymous character perfectly from head to toe, and it’s great to see there’s no crazy reimaginings or restyles going on here to bring the character up-to-date for a modern audience. Fans will be instantly drawn to the shoes, the hat and, of course, the carpet bag which must surely have been the inspiration for Hermione’s from the Harry Potter franchise – nostalgia abound!

Blunt, whose credits include The Girl on the Train and Edge of Tomorrow, will reunite with her The Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep in Mary Poppins Returns, which will also star Hamilton legend Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, a lamplighter in London during the Great Depression, where the film is set. Star of the original Mary Poppins Dick van Dyke will also return, although he’ll be playing the son of the original film’s villain, Mr Dawes Sr., rather than his original role of Bert.

The film will also star Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, Emily Mortimer and Ben Wishaw, with Mortimer and Wishaw playing the now-grown up Jane and Michael Banks, the two children from the original classic.

Slated for a Christmas 2018 release, Mary Poppins Returns is currently filming in London.
