The first Star Trek Beyond trailer beams in!
The interstellar Star Fleet adventurers are back in Simon Pegg’s Star Trek Beyond.
It doesn’t seem like two minutes since we were all guessing over the true identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan John Harrison in Star Trek Into Darkness, but believe it not, it’s been a full two years since J.J. Abrams took us back to the Final Frontier, which means that it’s high time the sequel, Star Trek Beyond, arrived in a cinema near you.
Co-written by star Simon Pegg – a self-confessed ‘Trekkie’ – Star Trek Beyond continues the adventures of the crew of the Starship Enterprise of Star Fleet as they embark on their five-year journey into the final frontier to basically see what they can find out amongst the stars. Little is known about the film’s actual plot, but the first trailer has certainly got us here at Screening Towers excited for the next instalment – there’s plenty of humour from leads Chris Pine and Karl Urban’s Captain Kirk and medical officer Bones, as well as plenty of action on far-flung worlds populated by a whole host of new, exotic species. Undoubtedly, the seeds planted by J.J. Abrams are now firmly established, and although he’s left for pastures new (cough Star Wars cough), it seems like the franchise is in new director Justin Lin’s (Fast & Furious) hands, who’s quickly snapped up Idris Elba (Luther), who is rumoured to be playing the role of the film’s villain.
Of course, as Star Trek fans the world over will already know, 2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of the TV show’s arrival on our screens, so Star Trek Beyond is surely aspiring to be a fitting tribute to the series in the eyes of its cult following, especially with a new TV show confirmed to be in the works for broadcast in the coming years.
Star Trek Beyond opens in the UK on 22 July 2016 and stars recurring actors Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin, as well as introducing Idris Elba (Luther) to the film universe.
