The Summer 2017 film calendar just went bananas

Star Wars happened, everything changed. Again.

If, like us, you like to pop the biggest releases on your calendar so you know exactly when they’re coming out, you may want to get some Tippex, or a Sharpie, or some other form of correcting device, as studios have just had a massive reshuffle of loads of huge films.

It was announced earlier that Rhian Johnson’s as-yet-untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII is possibly getting some minor rewrites to take into account the fan reactions to some of The Force Awakens‘s characters by reducing the roles of some new characters which are to be introduced in the next instalment, and it seems that this change may have prompted a shift in its release date. Where it was originally to premiere sometime during Summer 2017, it’s now been pushed back to December 15 2017, so that’s a good few extra months to wait before we can return to a galaxy far, far away.

Anyway, if that wasn’t enough, it now leaves a prime release window pretty empty, so studios have raced to put some of their other properties in that gap, reshuffling the street dates of lots of other films in the process. Strap yourself in, because this could get complicated…

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has had its release date moved.

Marvel’s solo Spider-Man film has now moved up a couple of weeks from July 28th to July 7th, which was originally the date the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film – subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales – was to debut, however as a result of Sony swinging in to claim it for Spidey, Pirates 5 has been moved up. It’ll now take the date left vacant by Star Wars, releasing to cinemas a little bit earlier than planned, on May 26th.

Of course, this now leaves a space in the calendar which was previously held by Spider-Man, but fear not, because the Jumanji remake which was supposed to be released this Christmas, has been pushed back to July 28th.

In case you’re having trouble following all that (and, let’s be honest, we had to check it all twice upon first read), here’s a simple breakdown of the new release dates:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – May 26
  • Spider-Man – July 7
  • Jumanji – July 28
  • Star Wars: Episode VIII – 15 December
