Watch the final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens now.
Today’s trailer accompanies yesterday’s theatrical poster reveal, as we prepare to return to a galaxy far, far away…
As promised, Disney today released the final trailer for Star Wars – Episode VII: The Force Awakens, prior to its release in UK cinemas on December 17 2015.
The trailer, which you can watch above, gives us a great new look at some of the film’s new characters, and also shows the first footage of one of the new protagonists – John Boyega’s Finn – battling it out with Adam Driver’s evil Kylo Ren whilst wielding a blue lightsaber. Given the (very few) plot details which have been rumoured to be included in the film, many believe this to Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber which was ‘lost’ in The Empire Strikes Back during the iconic “I am your father” sequence.
In addition, we’re also treated to the first look at returning star Carrie Fisher as Leia Skywalker, comforted for reasons unknown by another of the saga’s original stars, Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.
The final poster for the film has proceeded the trailer and continues the timeless aesthetic of Star Wars posters of old, showcasing a montage of the film’s characters – both new and returning – locked in a battle between the Light and the Dark Side. Like most of the Internet, we’ve been pouring over the poster since its release to pick up on any little tidbits of information which could give us a clue as to the film’s content and, while we haven’t been able to glean that much, we have noticed a few points which rase a few questions in our mind:
- Most obviously, the poster doesn’t give us our first full look at Luke Skywalker, continuing the mystery surrounding his part in the film until its release. Many have theorised that Luke could be the big bad of the film, having fallen to the Dark Side in the period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, but this is yet to be confirmed. The most we’ve (presumably!) seen of Luke is a cloaked figure with a metal hand resting on R2-D2 on what seems to be the fiery planet seen in the trailers.
- The large ‘orb’ object in the top right of the poster looks pretty familiar, right? You’d be forgiven for thinking that it could be the Death Star, but given that we’ve had more than enough of that particular menace in past films, we’ve deduced that it’s most likely the new Starkiller Base. Little is known about Starkiller Base for the time being, but an entry in the official Star Wars Databank describes it as “an ice planet converted into a stronghold of the First Order and armed with a fiercely destructive new weapon capable of destroying entire star systems.” Could the giant cannon thing in the middle of the object be the “fiercely destructive new weapon” the Databank is referring to?
- Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma is looking suitably imposing in the center bottom of the poster – will we see her unmasked in the film or will she remain a shadowy, caped and faceless mystery throughout?
- Much was made of the hand which passed on Luke’s a mysterious lightsaber in the first trailer and while we still haven’t got final confirmation of who this hand belongs to, it’s looking increasing likely that it’s Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata’s. Could this be the character seen to the left of everyone’s favourite new Droid BB-8? With the poster featuring most of the film’s main characters, it would seem strange for this one image to be of a ransomer who simply appears in the background of a scene.
So there we have it! It’s very likely that today’s trailer will be the last footage we see of The Force Awakens before its release in December, so are you still anticipating the release expectantly, or are you sick of the saga’s return already?
